6 Cool, Unique Ways We Use Avocados, and None Are Toasts

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but here at Belle Bar, we love us some avocado. And what's not to love? They have so much to offer us and pretty much define what it means to be a wholesome food. What more could you really ask for? We know the typical ways to use ‘em; we can eat them on a million different toasts, we can put them on our face, and use them in our hair (hi Custom Restoring mask!). But did you know you could dye fabric with them? Or use them to scrub your feet? How about an anti-wrinkle eye cream with avocado as the main ingredient? Versatility is the name of the game and avocados are the MVP. With a list of benefits as big as theirs, how could they not be? By “them,” I mean the whole avocado, btw -- pit, pulp, and all. Let's dive in to some of our favorite ways to use this green fruit. You'll be surprised by what you might find!!
Avocado Fabric Dye
Yes, you read that right. You can use avocados to dye fabrics and they won't be green or brown, but pink! This requires a few of those pits you were probably gonna throw away I bet you assumed these were useless but, surprise! Every part of the avocado is useful in some way. The pits have a ton of benefits and uses on their own, including their ability to dye fabrics when boiled and reduced down.
Start by washing and pre-soaking your fabric(s) overnight. In a big pot, add enough water to cover the fabrics completely, and then start throwing in the pits. Rule of thumb: the more pits, the darker the color payoff. You want to bring the water-pit-fabric soup to a low boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Over low heat, the color should start to change after about 20-40 minutes. At this point, you can either leave it simmering for a couple more hours OR let it cool and steep overnight, until the fabrics reach your desired shade. This is a fun, natural way to experiment with dyes and add some je ne sais quoi to your wardrobe.
Summer's almost over but that doesn't mean grilling season has to be! Since they’re available year round, grilled avocados are delicious no matter the season. Start by cutting an avocado in half and removing the pit, then drizzle some good olive oil onto a preheated grill. In a bowl, mix the olive oil with some ground chipotle pepper and chili powder. Brush the mixture onto the fleshy side of the avocado and place them flesh down, leaving them for about 5 minutes or until they get those coveted grill marks. Avocados are rather plain in terms of their flavor, making them a great canvas for other, more intense flavors to stand out -- plus grilling fruit brings out their natural sweetness. Your taste buds will thank you!
Avocado Oil Makeup Remover
I don't know if it's just me but most store bought makeup removers leave a weird, filmy reside when I’m done wiping. Your typical makeup remover is full of stuff that isn't exactly nourishing either, and sometimes we forget to take those extra precautions to clean our faces after removing our makeup. We all know that oils are excellent for breaking down makeup, making avocado oil no different. Every oil has its own set of benefits, too, and since avocado oil is full of fatty acids and vitamins, it will leave your skin looking and feeling nourished, moisturized, and glowy. If you have oilier skin, be sure to use it in moderation because it does tend to clog the pores. It's a bit on the heavier side, so we recommend using it before bed!
Avocado Foot Scrub
Are your feet feeling super rough? Nail salon pedicures just not cutting it anymore? Cause they're certainly not for me! This DIY avocado foot scrub should do the trick! You’ll need 1 whole avocado (pulp, pit, and all), fresh lemon juice OR 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, and one tablespoon of coarse salt. Sounds good enough to eat, no? Grind the pit and mix it with the pulp, lemon or ACV, and salt. Be sure to soak your feet in warm water beforehand, that way your skin is nice and soft and that much easier to scrub off. Once your skin is soft enough, apply the scrub and work it into your feet in a circular motion. Rinse with warm water, lotion up if you'd like, and then (this is the best part tbh) put on some thick socks to really preserve all the goodness. Your feet should feel nourished and smooth, thanks to the abrasion from the avocado pit and the coarse salt. Plus, the ACV helps alkalize and balance the pH of your skin. Let's not forget about all those amazing fats that help nourish your skin, too! You’ll have baby soft feet again in no time.
One of the major selling points of avocados, for me, is their versatility as a food. We can grill them, bake them, spread them, and.. stuff them! Stuffed avocados are great because you can eat them cold or you can bake them to take it to the next level. The best part though, is that you can stuff them with just about anything. I’m talkin’ greens, meats, cheeses, and the works, all with that creamy, buttery base. Ahhhh...tastes like heaven. One of the most popular recipes for stuffed avocados is a baked egg avocado. If you’re anything like me and you’re willing to eat breakfast at any given hour of the day, this might be the perfect option for you. Plus, you’re getting all the good stuff -- the fats, the protein, the good carbs.

DIY Avocado Eye Cream
People tend to neglect the eye area, which is unfortunate since that area is super sensitive and one of the first on our faces to show signs of aging. As someone with probably the darkest under eye circles on the eastern seaboard, I’m constantly asking myself, How can I look less…. dead?
The answer my friends, as it always is when talking about our skin, is moisture. Luckily for us, avocado oil is chock full of nutrients and vitamins that provide our skin with some intense moisture. A little brand (see: BIG brand) called Kiehl’s sells a cult favorite avocado eye cream at $48 a pop! This is standard pricing for a prestige skincare brand, but still! The list of ingredients is full of stuff that’s hard to pronounce, with only three that are considered “natural.” I found a recipe that’s two (yes, two!) ingredients that was made to rival this luxury eye cream. All you need is 1 tablespoon of shea butter and 1 tablespoon of avocado oil. Melt down the shea butter and mix it in a bowl with the avocado oil. Once it’s well mixed, you can put it in the fridge if you’d like, but make sure it solidifies. Once it’s solid, stir it up a bit more and voila! Your very own 100% natural eye cream!
Why these two ingredients? Well, shea butter and avocado oil on their own are both great moisturizers, and combined? They’re powerful! Shea butter is rich in vitamins A and E, both of which are excellent for nourishing the skin. Like avocado oil, it’s full of fatty acids that keep the skin plump and moisturized. Since avocado oil is full of antioxidants, it helps fight against free radicals that can cause early signs of aging. The skin around our eyes is super delicate, that’s why using these two ingredients to keep it in check is a no brainer!
